We have nest #19! Karen Sewell called in to report a large serpentine crawl in front of the Beach Club Villas. There were a couple of areas of disturbed sand, too. Sandy MacCoss and Terry Fansler went to probe and a nest was found by Terry. Nest #19 was left in situ. Walkers today were Karen Sewell, Sarah, Betsy & Chris Quinn and friends Like & Sam Roser.
Nest 18
Walkers Terry Fansler, Gloria Reynolds, Sarah Quinn and Sarah's Friend "R.J." called with a crawl at the second house past the club. Bill Middleton with Eileen responded and found Nest 18. The 102 eggs were moved to their safer new home at the lot between the fourth and fifth house past the club. Four eggs were lost to a very aggressive ghost crab who attacked Gloria as it wasn’t happy with the nest being moved.
Nest 17
We have nest #17. Birthday girl, Stephanie Lea called in a crawl south of the old pier on south beach, they also observed a large body pit. Judy Morr went to probe. The first body pit had a lot of thrown sand, but an uncovered hole in the middle. However, there was an almost indiscernible second pit that looked like it was covered with grass clippings. On Judy's first attempt she found soft sand. Thinking that it was impossible to find a nest on her first try, she probed about 6 inches away and the sand was hard. Stephanie dug and found the eggs. They covered and screened the nest. Nest 17, left in-situ, is 150 yards south of the old pier. This was both Ann Carew and Lisa Murphy's first nest. A great morning for these walkers!
Nests 15 & 16
Veronica L'Allier and Bob Mason were the first callers with a crawl in front of the yellow house several houses past the club. Before the Nelsons could respond they called again with a crawl in front of the 4th house past the club. Bill Nelson found Nest 15 at the fourth house crawl and moved the 105 eggs back to a safer location with the assistance of walker Joleen Ardaiolo. The crawl by the yellow house took longer even though the mother dug an 8 inch hole, she didn't deposit any eggs. It was declared a false crawl.
Rob Jerome, Mike Vinson, Gary Holtz, Catherine Scully, Lisa Devon and Rob's brother-in-law Alan Rich called with a crawl in to the myrtles between Boardwalk 2 and 3. Bill Greubel responded and found Nest 16 which was left in situ.
Nest 14 - Happy Fathers Day!
Rachel Carter reported a crawl on Zone 3 near boardwalk 2. While talking with responder Bill Middleton another call came in from zone 3 reporting a second crawl. Soon after that Lisa Hand reported the third crawl on that zone. The Middletons probed, later Sandy MacCoss and Judy Morr arrived to help out. One crawl did produce nest 14. It was decided to relocate the 112 eggs because it was too close to the high tide line. The two other crawls were determined to be false crawls; but one looks promising and has been marked to watch when hatching time arrives.
