Nest 71

We ended June with Nest 71. This gives us 45 nests in June, easily eclipsing the old record of 35 set in 2015.

The crawl was found just south of boardwalk 6. The Doanes probed and found the nest below the high tide line and 108 eggs were relocated behind the original nest. The Zone 2 walkers, Cindy Willis and Heidi Lantin were delayed (this nest is at the very end of their walk) because they were picking up large amounts of trash, thank you! Zone 3 Walkers Valerie and Mark Doane, Rachel, Marshall and Neva Carter spotted the crawl as they finished their walk.

Nest 70

Walkers on North Beach won the prize today. The mama turtle was still on the beach when Walkers Sandy MacCoss, Alison Bowers, Martha Goldstein and J-Anna Smith got to the area between the two dog signs. Bill Greubel responded and found the eggs for Nest 70 before the mama made it back to the sea. Nest 70 was able to be left in situ.

Nests 66 through 69

Walkers Chris Palmer with Ray and Lucy Hoover called with three crawls all the way to the point. Two of the crawls had body pits. Judy Morr and Tim Morawski responded and found Nest 67. The second crawl was 20 yards further down the beach. After probing, this was declared a false crawl. Another 30 yards down the beach there was a crawl along the escarpment and then a body pit. Tim found Nest 68. Nest 67's 114 eggs and nest 68's 123 eggs were moved behind the old pier, nestled nicely beside each other.

Walkers Ginger Seabrook, Gloria Reynolds, Terry Fansler and Junior Turtle Patrol members Sara Quinn, Amanda and Grant Keiser identified 3 crawls. The first was 20 yards past Boardwalk 7. The second 20 yards further down and the third in front of the yellow house. Tim and Judy again responded. Tim found Nest 69 at the first crawl. It was left in situ. The other two were determined to be false crawls.

Walkers Mimi Montague, Lynne Madison, Karen Preston and Mimi's daughter Jennifer Otten found a crawl 20 yards north of Boardwalk 6. The Middletons responded and found Nest 66 with 145 eggs. The nest was not far above last night's high tide so it was moved higher on the dune, 60 yards north of Boardwalk 6.

Nests 64 & 65

Rick Segal reported a crawl with a body pit near the old Danger sign. Valerie and Mark Doane came to probe and discovered Nest 64, which was left in situ. The Walkers this morning were Rick and Francie Segal and Karen Williams. This was Karen's first crawl and nest, congratulations!

The Carter family and Marshall and Lisa Hand found a crawl just south of Boardwalk 5, which Bill and Eileen Middleton probed. They found Nest 65 which was also left in situ.

Supplement to Wednesday, June 19th Report

Sandy MacCoss & Jane Magioncalda went back to the beach Wednesday afternoon to probe further on the crawl found 100 yards south of the cross on zone 1. They found nest 60! They relocated the nest to a safer location.

Thursday Report

Another busy morning on the beach. We now have 63 nests! This puts us almost a month ahead of our pace in 2015 when we had our all time record 75 nests.
Walkers Lucy and Ray Hoover and Chris Palmer called first with a crawl 20 yards past the vehicle entrance. The Middletons responded and found Nest 61. With the help of the Walkers, the 111 eggs were moved directly behind the original nest, higher on the dune. The Walkers continued in their walk and found another crawl 300 yards past the old pier. Judy Morr responded and found Nest 62. Again, the experienced Walkers moved 107 eggs to behind the old pier.
Walkers Carol Ann Hoffman, Jim Lawrence and Patty, Kevin, Angela and Brandon Foltz then called with a crawl all the way to the end on the Kiawah River side of the beach. After 2 years of walking, the Foltz’s got their first nest when Tim found Nest 63!. The 89 eggs were moved to their new home 50 yards south of the first dog sign with the help of the happy Walkers.
